Non-Toxic Building & Material Systems/IAQ
Sick Building Syndrome or Building Related Illness are terms that we
see ever more frequently. As a society we are becoming increasingly aware
that the materials and building systems that surround us frequently emit
or off-gas toxic substances into the air we breath and affect our health.
There is a growing population of individuals who are extra sensitive to
these toxins and unable to comfortably live in environments that are not
free of them. It has been suggested that these people are our early warning
system to alert us of the need to clean up the indoor air we breath.
Many manufactures of carpets, solvents, sealants, wood products are
responding to this need. New ways of responding to radon problems are being
developed. Attention is being paid to how mechanical systems can be designed
free of fungal and bacterial spore production.
John Bower, in his book The Healthy House writes: "When you
consider the number of hours spent in your home (or office) it only makes
sense to build it so that its healthfulness benefits your own."
The following list contains links to sites that provide valuable
information to this new way of creating the environments we live in.
Envirosense Consortium
has perhaps the most extensive compilation of web links on IAQ available.
The EPA Indoor Air Home Page
provides information on common indoor air pollutants, sources of indoor
air pollution, and related resources.
J.Mosby West and Associates
provide comprehensive indoor environmental systems mechanical engineering
while specializing in Indoor Air Quality and energy efficiency concerns.
